SMAC Defending Our Asset
In 2005, Stratton Air National Guard Base was placed on the Pentagon’s Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) list.
Led by SMAC, community leaders and citizens rallied to protect the base – and our local economy – from the devastating effects of lost jobs or complete closure of the base.
SMAC leadership made presentations to government officials, business associations and service groups to heighten the awareness of the threat to our community if the base were to be closed.
Funds were raised via grants and corporate and private contributions to support the campaign to sustain Stratton Air National Guard Base in Glenville.
Ultimately, the efforts paid off. In effect, SMAC supporters served as “Minutemen” protecting this important asset in the Capital Region.
The need for support continues as military units continue to be tasked across the globe. Without a committed group of people, another BRAC could threaten this important economic and community resource to Schenectady County and the Capital Region.
The SMAC Minutemen are ready to show their support of the contributions of the members of the 109th Airlift Wing and other regional military units at a moment’s notice, in turn emphasizing integrity, service before self and excellence for our men and women in uniform.
